We have an extensive team of specialists, psychologists, dieticians and lifestyle coaches. Individual attention is one of our most important values. Mini Gastric Bypass

Watch the video explaining Mini Gastric Bypass (gastric bypass) treatment from our gastrointestinal surgeon Dr. Frits Berends below.

Explanation of treatment

Mini Gastric Bypass (gastric bypass)

The Mini Gastric Bypass is a somewhat newer version of a classic Gastric Bypass. This gastric bypass is also called a One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB = gastric bypass with one connection. The stomach reservoir in a Mini Gastric Bypass is slightly longer than in a conventional bypass to prevent bile from flowing back into the esophagus. The rest of the stomach just stays put and thus is not removed. Because part of the stomach is turned off, less hunger hormone is produced. So you can eat less, while still being less hungry. Weight loss from a Mini Gastric Bypass is the same as from a classic Gastric Bypass.

How it works:
The small intestine is connected to the reduced stomach. Even with this detour, the food does not come into contact with the digestive juices until later. In this way, 150-200 cm of intestine is skipped. But the small intestine is not cut. Because of the different route of food, the gut produces hormones that have a beneficial effect on feelings of hunger and satiety (how full you are). That helps to lose weight.

We check everything one more time before the operation is finished. When you wake up we have already closed all the wounds. So from the operation itself you don’t notice anything at all.

Difference with Gastric Sleeve

  • The operation is also on the small intestine
  • Nothing is removed, everything remains
  • Slightly better long-term weight loss
  • Better outcomes in people who have diabetes
  • Less heartburn than gastric sleeve
  • Slightly faster vitamin and mineral deficiencies

Difference with Gastric Bypass

  • A mini gastric bypass has not been around very long. The long-term results are less well known than with a classic gastric bypass
  • A mini gastric bypass has a slightly higher risk of acid reflux and ulceration
  • The mini gastric bypass is technically a little easier, as one less connection is made.

What are the wait times

At WeightWorks, there are no long wait times. Once you have started the preliminary process and the screening shows that you are suitable for one of our surgeries, you can be scheduled for your surgery within a few weeks. This is possible because we have a professional specialty team with one specialty, gastric reduction surgery. This allows us to work efficiently and thus help you quickly.
