Gastric Bypass
Watch the video below explaining Gastric Bypass (gastric bypass) treatment from our gastrointestinal surgeon Dr. Frits Berends.
Explanation of treatment
Gastric Bypass (Stomach Bypass)
A gastric bypass or stomach bypass is an operation in which the stomach is reduced in size and the digestive tract rerouted. Literally, the term “gastric bypass” means a bypass of the stomach.
People with gastric bypass lose an average of 70 percent of their excess weight. Because part of the stomach is turned off, less hunger hormone is produced. As a result, when you eat, you feel full faster that also lasts longer. That helps you eat less and therefore you lose weight.
How does the surgery go?
After you are put to sleep, surgery begins. The surgeon first takes a good look at the inside of your abdomen. Then a piece of the stomach the size of an egg is cast off. The rest of the stomach just stays put and thus is not removed. The small intestine is connected to the reduced stomach. This creates a bypass (Bypass) in which the food does not come into contact with the digestive juices until much later. In this way, 200-250 cm of intestine is skipped. Because of the different route of food, the gut produces hormones that have a beneficial effect on feelings of hunger and satiety (how full you are). That helps to lose weight. We check everything one more time before the operation is finished. When you wake up we have already closed all the wounds. So from the operation itself you don’t notice anything at all.
