Gastric Bypass (bypass surgery)

A gastric bypass is an operation in which the stomach is reduced in size and the digestive tract is rerouted. Literally, the term "gastric bypass" means a bypass of the stomach. People with a gastric bypass lose an average of 70 percent of their excess weight. Because part of the stomach is shut down, less hunger hormone is produced. As a result, you have a feeling of fullness faster when eating that also lasts longer. That helps you eat less and therefore you lose weight.

How is the operation performed?

After you have been put to sleep, the operation will begin. The surgeon will first take a good look at the inside of your abdomen. Then a piece of the stomach the size of an egg is stapled off. The rest of the stomach remains in place and is therefore not removed. The small intestine is connected to the reduced stomach. This creates a bypass (bypass) whereby the food only comes into contact with the digestive juices much later. In this way, 200-250 cm of intestine is skipped. Due to the other route of the food, the intestine produces hormones that have a beneficial effect on the feeling of hunger and satiety (how full you are). That helps to lose weight. We'll check everything again before the operation is over. When you wake up we have already closed all the wounds. You will not notice anything about the operation itself.

Difference with Gastric Sleeve

The operation also involves the intestines

Nothing is removed, everything remains in place

Slightly better weight loss in the long run

Better results in people who have diabetes

Less complaints of acid reflux

Slightly more shortages of vitamins and minerals

Differences with the Mini Gastric Bypass

There is longer experience with the classic gastric bypass compared to the mini bypass. Long-term results are widely known and show good results

Less chance of heartburn (reflux)

Technically, the classic gastric bypass is slightly more difficult, because one more connection is made compared to the mini bypass
